Face Recognition Modules

Face recognition modules with liveness detection for locks, access control and attendance terminals.

Overview

A face recognition module combines an image sensor, an infrared or structured-light depth path, and an embedded algorithm that decides whether the person in front of it is live and enrolled. The three parts have to be evaluated together — a good algorithm on a poor optical path still produces unreliable results in real lighting.

We supply modules with on-board liveness detection and on-module matching, so the host device only receives a decision and an identity. That keeps the lock or terminal firmware lean and avoids sending biometric data off the device.

For lock products, the practical constraints are height, angle and power. A face lock has to recognise a user standing at a natural distance, in a doorway that may be backlit, while running from a battery. We size the optical path and the wake strategy around those constraints rather than around a demo bench.

Capabilities

What this covers

01

Liveness detection

Infrared or depth-based liveness checks to reject photographs and screen replay attempts.

02

On-module matching

Enrolment and 1:N matching on the module, with biometric data kept on the device.

03

Low-power wake

Presence-triggered wake paths so the recognition engine is not running continuously on battery products.

04

Optical path design

Field-of-view, mounting height and backlight handling specified for the actual door or terminal geometry.

Specification

Technical specifications

CameraRGB image sensor with IR or depth liveness path (model dependent)
Recognition mode1:N identification, 1:1 verification
LivenessIR / depth-based anti-spoofing
InterfacesUART, USB 2.0 (model dependent)
Template storageOn-module database, capacity model dependent
Supply voltageTypically 5 V or 3.3 V depending on model
Recognition distanceConfigured per product; typical arm’s-length to ~1 m
Operating temperature−20 °C to +60 °C (model dependent)

Recognition performance depends on lighting, mounting height, user population and liveness configuration. Final parameters are validated on the target enclosure with real users.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can a printed photo or a phone screen fool the module?

The liveness path uses infrared or depth information, which is not satisfied by a flat image. Liveness thresholds are configurable and validated during integration.

Does the module work in low light?

Yes, with IR illumination. Visible-light-only modules perform poorly in dark corridors, which is why we specify the IR path for door products.

Where is the face data stored?

Templates are stored on the module. We can also design the product so that no biometric data leaves the device.
